Need
Need
- Methamphetamine, Heroin and other powder and crystalline drugs are transported and sold in very small amounts, as small as 1/10 of a gram (known as a “point)
- Unlike marijuana they have no odor detectable by a human and are easy to hide
- Densely populated areas are the hardest hit. The Chippewa Falls PD alone forwarded 43% of all the drug cases in Chippewa County in 2016
- In 2010 it took until December for the 400th felony to be filed in Chippewa County, this year it happened in July. Many attribute this to the rise in meth
- To be effective a K9 needs to be working where the drugs are. State statute and case law does not allow delaying a traffic stop to go and get a K9 in many cases
- Tax payer costs continue to increase dramatically due to these drugs in areas like foster care, drug treatment, and incarceration
- The hardest hit are the underprivileged due to the low cost and easy access of these drugs
- A meth house is physically toxic, especially to children who are already at risk due to the neglect of their addict parents. DHS experienced an increase in placement out of the homes from 28 cases in 2013 to over 140 in just the first half of 2017
- A K9 can be a lifesaving search and rescue tool for our elderly and those with mental health issues when they wander away from homes and care centers
- Every year officers are killed during foot pursuits, while tracking suspects and during building searches. A K9 can perform all these tasks safer and more effectively
- Often the mere presence of a K9 can prevent a suspect from fleeing or assaulting the police
- A K9 is a great icebreaker between kids and our officers and it’s is a great way to build relationships and public trust
- Between our department’s award winning social media program and the many community engagement programs we have, a K9 would fit perfectly into that role here with the Chippewa Falls Police Department
